Donaghey Scholars announced for 2017-18 school year

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock has announced new recipients of the prestigious Donaghey Scholarship for the 2017-18 school year. Donaghey Scholars receive a substantial financial package that includes: full tuition (up to 18 hours per semester), stipend, study abroad financial assistance, housing subsidy, and new laptop computer.

Students win trip to Museum of African American History and Culture

Eight UA Little Rock students who went to Washington, D.C. June 2-4, after winning an essay contest to promote knowledge of African American history. In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Black History Month, the Joel E. Anderson Institute on Race and Ethnicity held an essay contest in February in which students answered: "Why does the United States need a National Museum of African American History and Culture?"

STUDENTS DESIGN TORNADO SHELTERS FOR UA LITTLE ROCK

Twelve students from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Department of Construction Management and Civil and Construction Engineering faced a unique problem for their senior design project: to design a tornado shelter that could protect up to 900 people on campus against wind speeds of up to 250 miles per hour.

Acxiom Diversity Scholarship recipient

University of Arkansas at Little Rock students won four of this year's 10 Acxiom Diversity Scholarships. In its sixth year, the highly competitive program provides $5,000 and an opportunity for a paid internship at Acxiom, a leading data provider for marketers. The company selects recipients from throughout the country based on their professional interests and academic achievement in an information technology-related field of study. "Acxiom is passionate about helping the next generation of leaders pursue their dreams through computer science and information technology careers," said Scott Howe, Acxiom CEO and president, in a news release. "Our support positions them for future success and helps foster a more diverse pool of qualified talent, which will benefit the marketing and technology industries for years to come." All four UA Little Rock award winners are students in the Donaghey College of Engineering and Information Technology. This year's award decisions were particularly challenging because of the quality of the scholarship applications, said Tammy Sanders, Acxiom director of engagement. "We look forward to the contributions these students will make to Acxiom and to the marketing industry," Sanders said in the news release.

Twenty teams from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and New Mexico competed during a virtual qualifying round on Feb. 18. The UA Little Rock team and squads from seven other universities will advance to compete in the Southwest regional March 17-19 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
