UA Little Rock's Gabrielle Spankus was recognized Sept. 18 as the true freshman was named to the Bluff City Showdown All-Tournament Team following her performance over the weekend in Memphis.

A UA Little Rock student gained valuable professional experience over the summer as part of the Arkansas Newspaper Foundation's Summer Internship Program. Joe Santana, a junior mass communication major from Dumas, was one of four college students selected for the internship program. He worked as a reporter and photographer for The Dumas Clarion over the summer.

UA Little Rock junior Andrew Payton has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Male Cross Country Runner of the Week on Sept. 13.

A joint UA Little Rock/UAMS doctoral student has been recognized for his research to create a custom protein database to combat complex diseases like melanoma by identifying therapeutic vulnerabilities.

UA Little Rock sophomore Matteo Cristoni has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Co-Male Golfer of the Week.

A UA Little Rock student has written a successful grant that will help fund a pilot suicide prevention education program in Arkansas jails. Kristina Johnson, a graduate student in professional and technical writing, wrote the grant on behalf of the Arkansas chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP-AR). The nonprofit received a $10,000 grant from the Roy and Christine Sturgis Trust to supplement funding for a pilot suicide prevention education program in two Arkansas county jails. Bank of America is the sole trustee of the Roy and Christine Sturgis Trust.

Adria Waters, who is earning a Ph.D. in Reading from the School of Education and is an assistant professor of education at Lincoln University, is one of eight higher education professors in Missouri who have been selected to participate in the Early Literacy Fellow program.

A UA Little Rock student is one of four students selected across the University of Arkansas System who is an inaugural recipient of a grant honoring James L. "Skip" Rutherford III, dean emeritus of the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service. Brian Neel, a Pine Bluff native who is pursuing a master's degree in history, will use his $1,000 grant to fund research on the Ralph Bunche community, a predominantly Black neighborhood in Benton. Funds will help pay for his equipment and travel for the oral history project, which will explore the impact of segregation and desegregation on the community.
