Caitlyn Bellamy named a Girls in the Middle grant recipient

2015 Oct 26

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Jodie Mahony Center for Gifted Education recently announced that Caitlyn Bellamy of Greenbrier has been named a Girls in the Middle grant recipient for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Girls in the Middle was developed by the Mahony Center to encourage girls pursuing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. All girls invited to the 2015 Duke TIP Recognition Ceremony held in May were invited to apply.

From an outstanding group of talented girls, 30 students were invited to participate in Girls in the Middle. The recipients attended STEM sessions at TIP Scholars' Day, held in conjunction with the recognition ceremony, and went to the UALR campus for the Girls in the Middle Re-connect Day.

On Oct. 10, the Museum of Discovery in Little Rock collaborated with the Mahony Center for a special STEM Scavenger Hunt and Tesla Coil Show. These experiences prepared the girls to design their own unique exhibits to present in a showcase on the UALR campus.

"The young women who participated in Girls in the Middle have brought creativity and enthusiasm for a broad range of careers in STEM. The Mahony Center has been fortunate to have the partnership of the Duke-TIP program, the Museum of Discovery, and Arkansas for Gifted and Talented Education (AGATE) as they collaborate to make the Re-connect Day a special one for all of us," said Dr. Ann Robinson, director of the Mahony Center.

Girls in the Middle is funded through an Enrichment Opportunity Grant from AGATE.
